Welcome!
Thank you for considering Prince Edward Island (PEI) as your new home. On behalf of all hairdressers across our beautiful Province we extend a warm welcome to all newcomers and especially to hairdressers.
PEI is the smallest province located on the East Coast of Canada. With a population of one hundred forty six (146) thousand we are a warm and caring people. We are a community encompassing cities, towns, villages and beautiful rural areas. As our name implies we are an island.
The P.E.I. Hairdressers’ Association was incorporated in 1959 under the Hairdressers’ Act. The Association enables all licensed hairdressers and their salons to have control of their industry and to determine its direction. The Association represents very professional and caring individuals who take great pride in meeting all of their clients’ expectations. The Association is empowered through the Hairdressers’ Act to be the hairdressing licensing body for our Province.
To assist newcomers who have a trade in hairdressing, we present the following information to assist you with the transition to the Island hairdressing industry.
Hairdressing services include, cutting, styling, coloring, permanent wave, straightening, and bleach treatment.
To apply for a hairdressers’ license an individual must submit a copy of their current country’s license and applicable diplomas in various hairdressing areas, as well as a detailed resume presenting your experience in the hairdressing career. All documentation must be presented in English and certified as proof of original documentation.
Based on the skill level of the individual the Association may issue a hairdressing license under a “Work Permit” condition. This work permit allows the hairdresser to be employed in a salon, and upon completing the required permit hours of employment and successfully completing a practical examination an unconditional license will be issued.
Individuals whose documentation is not adequate to determine the hairdressing skills at a level to meet the requirements of the Association, the Association will perform a skill assessment, and if necessary, will work with the individual to upgrade the skills to meet the requirements to be licensed as a hairdresser on PEI.
Our Association has a proven record of working with newcomers to provide you the opportunity to be a successful hairdresser in our Province.
We welcome your inquiries. Our contact information is included on our home page.
